Council Docket
Council Committees

The San Diego Youth Commission was formed on April 15, 2002. The 23-member San Diego Youth Commission was formed by Councilman Brian Maienschein in order to advise and provide recommendations to the City Council on pertinent issues to youths. Each council office has nominated youths between the ages of 14-22 who live throughout the City of San Diego.

Currently, the commissioners meet monthly to work on common goals, devise plans, and create policies important to young San Diegans. Some issues include alcohol and tobacco abuse, street racing and health issues and the development of park and recreation facilities. In addition, the Youth Commission will have the opportunity to develop their own policy agenda and review issues sent to them by the City Council.

Councilmember Maienschein has been an active participant in youths organizations and juvenile issues for several years, as he has been instrumental in the development and expansion of the Teen Court program. He believes that forming a youth advisory committee gives young people a voice in San Diego. For far too long government officials have made decisions and taken actions affecting our younger generation without asking for input on what they believe and how they feel about specific issues.

The San Diego Youth Commission offers youths the opportunity to see first hand how government works and it allows youths to represent themselves and their peers in a positive manner. The Commission is also a fantastic opportunity to bring together young people from various ethnic, socio-economic, and geographic backgrounds to debate issues, create meaningful policies and learn more about other communities in San Diego.
